Canmore, ALBERTA – Well, that was a waste of
time!
Monday, Canadians went to the polls and chose their candidates to represent them in Ottawa. And the result?
Nada, zilch – no real change whatsoever.
A $600 million plus wasted exercise called by our “pretty” boy Prime Minister because he thought he could get a majority. He didn’t. The results reveal a parliament with almost exactly the same vote split as before the writ was
dropped.
Once again it is apparent that there is a massive divide in the thinking and values of Eastern Canada and Western Canada. Between those who live in rural ridings and those who live in the major cities.
What does this have to do with your business you may wonder?
Everything and it’s good news for you.
You, as the business owner, do NOT need to cater to everybody. You do not need to be LIKED by everybody.
An election like this proves that not all people think alike, have the same desires, aspirations, values and challenges.
Your best clients, customers, patients are also different than the crowd. They inevitably have similar internal emotions of fear, greed, anger, pain, egos etc.
You need only tap into the core emotions, wants, challenges of your best customers and can safely ignore or better yet, dissuade all others.
Why?
Because you do not need every possible customer to be really successful in your business. You don’t.
Now you still need to do some research. Evaluate what are the key attributes of your ideal customers. And not just the obvious such as income, place of residence, education etc. That’s simply a starting point.
No, you want to know about their mindset, the psychology, the motivations of your best prospects.
Dan Kennedy explains this best: “So, if you’re trying to sell your brother-in-law your used car, you have a huge advantage over a car dealer, because you know your brother-in-law, right? So, if his ego gratification comes
from being the cheapest guy on the planet and finding bargains, you then know how that’s how you’ve got to position this, right?
“If his ego gratification comes from being helpful to the family, then you’re going to sell to him entirely differently. It’s almost going to be about buying the car as a favour,
right?
“…so, things like what keeps them up a night? Gets Harry out of bed at three o’clock and downstairs with no light on, a piece of pie and then half an hour later, Marge realizes he’s down there – what’s the
conversation?”
Though simple in concept, trying to narrow down your group, your “target market”, is not easy. It takes time. It takes introspection and deep thinking.
And then your industry might have all kinds of rules and regulations about not being able to actually promote your service based on these “pain” points or the platform you want to use, does not allow
it.
This is definitely a challenge for you, if you are in this position. Fortunately, there are always avenues to by-pass, or avoid these restrictions. And, with testing and measuring, you could eventually come up all the solutions yourself.
