Kingston, ONTARIO – Want to know what the worst thing about all the
negative hype around Covid is? People are travelling less.
Why is this an issue? (And I’m not talking about the loss of income for all those in the travel business.)
It’s that fewer people are getting around to see how things really are in other parts of the world. They rely instead on mainstream media.
Give you some examples.
I am currently in Kingston ON. Been in the province over a week after driving across the country (again) from my hometown of Canmore, AB.
During the drive, all my parents and one sibling were talking about was how bad Alberta was doing with yet another “wave” of (not sure which variation now) of the dreaded virus. “Are you OK? Be careful now! Sure it is safe to
drive?”
Compared to their province, cases per 100,000 were the most in the country. The stats looked bad.
Actuality? Not so much.
No hospitalizations at all in our community. No panic. Friends I know working in the hospitals telling me privately – it is a non-event.
Now – are there some serious issues. Yes. But nothing near the hysteria that is being reported.
The same thing here.
Friday evening, the streets were filled with young people coming and going. The restaurants are full and there were lineups of people waiting to get in. Everyone has their masks which they dutifully put on going in and out. But there is no
hysteria. There is no issue. There are not thousands dying in the streets.
What I am getting at is that when you travel to other places – you invariably discover that things are never as bad as reported. People are living their lives, taking care of their individual businesses, doing what most of us do every day.
So, with all of the negativity you hear all around you, it is very important that you both insulate yourself from it and remind yourself of all the things you should be grateful
for.
Let me leave you this week with a great phrase my good friend Steve Messineo coined just the other week.
“Keep Calm and T.A.F.E.L. On!”
Here’s how he came up with this slogan and it’s meaning.
We are all bombarded by negativity on a daily basis; especially by the media and by social media. Shawn Achor, author of "The Happiness Advantage" wrote, it takes 3 times the amount of positive stimuli to overcome the
effects of 1 negative stimuli. So, how do we do this?
We can do this through T.A.F.E.L. - an acronym I thought of this morning and one I think my good friend Hugh Tafel will appreciate for obvious reasons. 😃 I'll define it now:
🙏🏻 Thank: When you look around at all that is going on, it is easy to give thanks to all that is good in one's life. I am thankful for my family, my friends, my home, my health, my work, all of the
good times I have had in my life, and so much more. Thanking and being thankful in your heart and in your mind for all that is positive in your life for a few minutes each day is a great way to overcome any negative stimuli.
🤝🏻 Appreciate: Appreciate people for who they are and what they believe in. Appreciate that everyone is different, and those differences are what makes us human. Appreciate people's perspectives and
reflect on them before too quickly criticizing them. If we would all show more appreciation for each other, we would all get along so much better. It is also necessary for the next step in this acronym.
🥰 Forgive: Forgive anyone and everyone who made or makes you angry, sad, frustrated, or depressed. Forgive those people in your heart and in your mind, even if you can't say it to their faces. For
example, mad about something our President or some other politician did? Forgive him/her and let it go. Don't let other's actions ruin your day. As hard as it may be to forgive people, especially those who have hurt you in any way, I believe from my own experience that it is necessary in order to move and be a better person.
👩🏻🏫 Educate: Consistently find time to educate yourself and other's. Education breeds self-confidence and satisfaction for learning something new and applying it to make your life and those you love lives better. Educating yourself on other people's perspectives, really digging deep and not just accepting the stuff thrown at you by mainstream and social media, also allows for
appreciation and cooperation, both of which we could use a lot more of as a country.
😂 Laugh: We all should do more of this. Laughter is the best medicine they say, and when you think about it, how good do you feel when you are able to have a hearty laugh. Find those books, videos,
interactions, whatever that make you laugh daily and you'll feel much better about life in general.
So, there you have it everyone. Keep Calm and T.A.F.E.L. on! Have a fantastic week! #thankful #appreciation #forgiveness #education #laughter = #happiness
(with thanks to Steve Messineo)
