Canmore, ALBERTA – The first inkling I had that there was a problem was when every time I refreshed my mobile browser – the exact same stories came up in my Newsfeed.

The damn site didn’t even load on my laptop!

So, of course I started thinking maybe my account had been suspended or removed. Or maybe our Wi-Fi was down. Then my wife came into the office asking me why she couldn’t access her groups and chats.

Well – that was my Monday morning, like millions of us when Facebook and its related platforms were down for hours during the day.

Some say good ole Zuckerberg lost billions that day. (We can all wish… 😁)

Then the alt-sites began speculating on whether the outage had anything to do the “whistle-blower” speaking to a US Senate Subcommittee and the social media giant’s wish to delete key data that might hurt it from whatever might be the outcome from this testimony.

Naturally, I have no idea either way. But…I do know that most of us, (yours truly included) would do well to be less reliant and “addicted” to it.

Importantly, as I tirelessly tell and advise my clients; you do not want to be overly reliant on any one medium or platform, for the success of your business. Beit marketing or operations.

One, you own neither the content nor your “followers” and they can be “disappeared” in a heartbeat. For any reason, real or imagined or simply because of a failure of the servers.

Two – if your operations are overly reliant on one platform, servers, tech, employee etc, your business can be wiped out quickly and mercilessly.

You need to set up back-up systems, back-up of data. And you need to OWN your customer, client, patient lists and have and use multiple means of communicating with them. This includes good old fashion direct mail and the humble phone.

If you currently do not have lists and data on your current customers and prospects and an independent way of keeping in touch – this event is your wake-up call. Get on it – now.
