CANMORE, ALBERTA – Finally, after weeks of smoke-filled air, we woke to a
“normal” cool, sunny morning, with a dark blue sky, backdropping the Rocky Mountains that surround us.
The air smelled fresh. Visibility was “unlimited”.
Tourist and resident alike walked about with stupid smiles on their faces and a jump in their steps. I and my fellow tennis players couldn’t stop remarking on what a beautiful day it was to hit some balls.
Those retired, revelled in their retirement. Those with a day off work, were pleased at their good fortune that this day shined brightly. And those on holiday, felt that surely, this was what a vacation should be
like.
That was Monday morning.
Today, I finally took a gander at last week’s local newspaper. Immediately, I thought to myself, “Are all the advertisers asleep at the wheel? Is the owner home? Dreaming of retirement? Did the weeks of smoke dent their
brain?
Why did I ask myself these questions?
Because the ads I saw were terrible. No business owner who truly wanted his or her phone to ring, people to shop or dine would have created such trash. Surely these had to have been created by hapless staff members while the owner was
away!
Here are few headlines to show you what I mean.
“Healthy Beautiful Smile! Accepting new patients”
“Redfining Project Delivery in the…Valley”
“This summer, create your own backyard oasis…”
“In a time of so many unknowns, have peace of mind with Clean Air in your home. Call today”
Are you kidding me?
And this is just a small sample. Each and every ad full of jargon which any competitor could (and does) use. No differentiation. No inkling of solving a problem their customer might have with a solution they can deliver that the
customer cannot.
No irresistible offer.
It’s a trap all businesses, and especially local businesses have fallen into, since 1945. Ad agencies promote the same drivel. Every advertiser has fallen for the lie of brand building and name recognition versus tested and proven direct
marketing.
