There’s something special about the smell of fresh baking. And when I bit into that warm, soft cinnamon bun – I knew we had once again made the right decision.
That’s the cool thing about road trips. You often find these little, local gems that make the drive worthwhile. We were on a trip to a little traveled area of British Columbia known as the West Kootenays, along the US
border; taking advantage of a small opening in the on again, off again, “lockdown” edicts.
For those that could use or rely on, the extra tourist business, any revenues from folks like us are a welcome addition.
Nonetheless, each and every local business we frequented, from the bakery to our quaint BnB – all showed an amazing lack in one key business fundamental.
No customer list building.
No request for a review. No system to ensure we come back and none to enlist our help in getting referrals.
Why?
I guess Dan Kennedy said it best: “Doing Something We’d Rather Not Do, To Get A Result We Very Much Want Has A Name -> Maturity”. And most owners of businesses and professional practices act like a bunch of
teenagers defying the requests of parents to help with the household chores. They know they should but decide not to, just because.
Well, I got news for you.
You are letting thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars flow out your door at best and setting yourself up for business failure at worst.
Overcoming this kind of obstinacy and reluctance by owners is not easy. Heck – who really wants to grow up?
