“You think I’m going to be sitting in line at United?! That’s the only way (via private airline) you can get around. No apologies for that.” ~ Bernie Sanders
(Can’t read the full email – click
here for the online version.)
The hypocrisy of the socialist left knows no bounds, as the above quote from infamous “anti-wealthy” multi-millionaire Sanders shows. I laughed in spite of myself when I read the story.
For some reason, difficult to understand for yours truly, countless people still believe that everyone needs to be equal. Then they turn a
blind eye when the leaders espousing this idea lead lives that show that “some people are more equal than others” in the socialist world.
Now, I get Bernie’s point. When you’ve got to be in 4 or 5 places in a hurry and there are 30,000 people waiting with checkbook in hand to see you, travelling coach ain’t going to cut it. Even first-class is too slow. Might as well cough up the $15,000/hour fee and charter your own plane.
That’s the beauty of the private enterprise system. There is an endless supply of goods and services at a whole variety of prices. From discount to absolute luxury.
We were reminded how often people and governments get this key idea wrong multiple times during our latest trip to Africa.
We had decided to drive up to Etosha National
Park on the afternoon of our arrival at our lodging just south of the park. At the gate, we were met by a stern-faced woman, who had us fill out a bunch of paperwork, including passport info, where we were staying etc.
But she did not ask for any fees to be paid.
When I asked where we needed to stop to pay, she gave me a derogatory retort, something
along the line that the payment office would be on the right, 20 kilometers up the road.
Alrighty then, we thought to ourselves. Someone didn’t get up on the right side of the bed.
It turned out that the park office was inside a walled town, obvious once you’ve been there. Once again, however, the difference in service from a government official and what we were receiving at
our lodge, was night and day.
Because not only was the park office there to receive one’s fee for entering the Park but they were also the receiving office for the now government run “Safari Lodge” that was contained within the town. And to say that these staff were surly is an understatement.
Fortunately, the beauty of the park and the abundance of wildlife we ended up
seeing, more than offset the experience at the gates.
And the way we were greeted upon arriving at our Lodge outside of the park earlier that day, with glasses of cool refreshing beverages, as soon as we pulled up.
We are grateful we live in a world where, if one “only works a little harder”, one can travel the world, fly business-class or even charter a jet.
The point in this little story, however, isn’t about how much better things are and work under private enterprise versus the state, even though true.
The point for you and your clients, if you are a business coach, is that one should not be fixated on being the lowest price competitor. Unless you want to be a Walmart or Costco – there usually is no advantage to be obtained with a
low-price strategy.
Rather, work on building value into your services and products such that you can serve both a larger market and, at a minimum, the high-end one. Often, you will find less competition and earn more profits.
My newly revamped Business Academy goes into detail how you can do this, for less than a cappuccino a day. Check it out here.
Until next week,
Stay healthy and focus on profit!
