Gotta love those Yogi Berra quotes. Like; “It’s déjà vu all over again.” Or; “it ain’t over till it’s over.”

Another saying I really like, (not from YB) one I’ve told my daughter often, is: “If you don’t ask, the answer for sure is NO. So, what do you have to lose by asking?” 

I was thinking about this idea when I became more than a little frustrated at cleaning out my inbox loaded with emails from the same companies, sending me daily (and more) promotions and offers.

Funny thing, though, I had been receiving them for months. I had simply chosen to ignore them. Until now.

Note, these were not coming from cold sources. I had purchased one thing or another from those companies. I kept them, I’m sure, because I was thinking in the back of my mind, they may offer up a big discount on something I’d like to buy. Sometime. Soon.

I ended up sending a friend of ours the coupon code from one of these companies for a 20% discount on a product they definitely were going to use. So, while I wasn’t a buyer this time, they did get a sale.

This is a big lesson for small business owners like you. 

Too often, many owners hesitate to send emails to their list of prospects and customers, because they are afraid of spamming them. So timid are they that they miss out on thousands and tens of thousands of dollars in revenue. 

As Zig Ziglar repeatedly said: “Timid salespeople have skinny kids.”

This does bring up an important point. How much is too much?

That's a great question! When it comes to big brands sending multiple emails a day, it’s all about strategy and understanding their audience. Many of these companies operate with a massive customer base and data-driven marketing tactics. They’ve found that frequent communication can increase engagement and sales. 

They track open rates, click-through rates, and conversions to adjust their strategies in real-time. They have processes and operations in place such that they can segment their audience to those who are receptive to more frequent offers, from others who respond better with a calmer approach. 

It’s all about personalization.

For instance, during sales events or holiday seasons, you might receive more emails from your favorite online retailer. This can feel overwhelming, but those brands are balancing urgency with value. They aim to ensure you’re always aware of their best deals and promotions, because, let's face it, in the crowded retail landscape, a missed opportunity might mean losing a prospective sale to a competitor.

So, why aren’t they worried about sending too many emails? 

For one, they have built a loyal following and they offer value in each email to each segment.  There’s less risk of alienating customers compared to smaller businesses, which do not segment their audience nor provide much in the way of value in each communique.

They also offer a way for subscribers to control email preferences—like selecting how often they want to hear from the sender or opting in for specific types of offers—which empowers consumers and fosters harmony in the communication.
 

Here’s the takeaway for you.

If you’re considering ramping up your email frequency, it’s vital to ensure that each message is packed with value. Make every email count by including exclusive offers, valuable tips, or entertaining stories that resonate with your audience. Track your open and click rates. 

Lastly, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask for feedback! Short of sales, there’s nothing better than receiving earnest replies from real people.
