2025! Here’s to a prosperous and healthy New Year for everyone.
It feels a little surreal to be writing this from the center of the Americas. New Year’s Eve in this capital city was a non-stop fireworks display. The feeling we had was that everyone and every building got into the act for at least 30 minutes. It was hard to see through the haze and smoke after a while.
But that wasn’t enough for some, as we were awakened around 2:00 AM by
loud explosions nearby. Let the celebrations continue….
We’ve had a bit of a whirlwind trip getting here.
After spending 10 days in Whitefish MT, we headed north across the border for a quick visit with my wife’s mother, a sister and numerous nieces, nephews and their children. The weather was almost “balmy”, being 4 or 5 degrees above
freezing.
At the US border going south, the stern officer asked us, tongue in cheek, whether we had a body in the back of the car under all of the stuff we were carrying. It must seem a little strange to see a car stuffed to the ceiling, although I am sure they see their share of Sunbirds driving south for the winter.
Driving south was fine for the
first 2 days. Weather cooperated nicely. But, as usual, we experienced driving rain while nearing Salt Lake City, in the dark.
The worst, however, was yet to come.
After spending an evening with another cousin of my wife in Grand Junction, we set out for Denver Airport – where we had organized a flight to Panama.
Other than a nice tail wind, the drive was uneventful until we neared Vail Co. This community is situated just west of a high pass, which often has tough winter conditions.
This time was no exception. Thick wet snow was falling and soon, the freeway was snow-covered. This is not a problem for us. We drive a 4x4 Volvo – with winter tires.
The problem was the many truckers who either failed to see the “chain-up” sign or were in denial that there would be a problem. Soon traffic was backed up as these truckers simply stopped in the middle of the highway to put chains on their tires, since they had no traction at all. Two truckers, smack dab in the middle of the road were in danger of sliding into one another. Cars either couldn’t or wouldn’t drive around them.
Conditions continued like this past Copper Mountain, then Silverthorn. It wasn’t until we neared Denver, at a lower elevation, that the conditions improved. By then, the traffic was bad. And it got worse as we continued to drive across the city. An accident on the I-70 near Aurora stopped us for close to 30 minutes.
My wife and I both looked at
each other and decided that when we returned, we would drive a different way back.
After that drive, the challenge of getting through airport security and an overnight flight seemed easy.
There’s a phrase I say to myself and clients, whenever there are challenges to overcome enroute to a worthy goal. “If it was easy, everyone would do
it.”
Meaning, achievements and success have no meaning, nor do they have value, if they came easily.
