Somewhere in
Namibia:
“Do we really need to pay these guys to secure our car? We’re on the main street!”
(Can’t read the full email – click here for the online version.)
Since I last wrote, we’ve now traveled from eastern Namibia to close to its famous Etosha National Park in the north.
We’ve walked among Giraffes, spotted groups of Baboons and seen most of the antelope species, from the tiny Duiker to the large Eland. Of course, there are birds – from the small Sociable Bird that creates huge nests in the trees that contains hundreds to the massive
Ostrich.
The other day we had the opportunity to witness rescued Cheetahs getting their regular exercise – sprinting after a lure at breakneck speeds, just meters from where we stood behind a protective enclosure.
Beyond the wildlife and flat arid lands with it’s Kamel Thorn (Acacia trees) and thorn bush, interrupted by the remains of ancient volcanoes, there is
the human, cultural element, which always makes travel so interesting.
Take for instance, the young men, in company uniform, waving and flagging passing cars to come to, not only their gas station but to their specific pump. Smiling, laughing, gesticulating, they do everything they can to encourage you to turn you car in.
Then there are the parking guys.
These young men, mostly wearing some kind of vest with reflective tape, seem to bound from nowhere, to “assist” you in parking your car, then placing a small piece of paper on your dash, denoting your car as under their “protection”.
This happens on the main street where there is public and police and even in the parking lots of shopping malls and businesses.
As soon as you come back from your errand, the guy reappears to collect his “pay” from the car owner. The correct amount seems to be a few Namibian dollars or 25-50 cents. The “attendant” then removes his “ticket” from your vehicle and you go on your way.
There is no apparent “security” worry.
Our South African friends tell us
that leaving your car was a big concern at one time and this was a valid and useful way to ensure your vehicle did not get vandalized or broken into. Now, it is more of a custom. There still are many unemployed or under-employed and this system, acts like a welfare scheme – except, it is done voluntarily.
One thing stood out for me though, about this activity.
Those who acted fastest, had the most enthusiasm, invariably were the ones who got the “sale”. Dan Kennedy talks about this a lot under the moniker:
If They Don’t Buy Now. They Probably Never Will.
Here’s a small recap of what he wrote on this topic in a recent email:
“Let me
be blunt: the word that matters in the phrase “created urgency” is not urgency—it’s created. We’re not talking about panic because of a hurricane. We’re talking about strategically designed, engineered panic that makes your prospect pick up the phone or pull out the credit card right now.
See, if you think being persuasive is about laying out features and benefits, you’re already losing. Sales
are made at the intersection of timing and emotion. And most prospects? They leave that intersection without ever stopping their car.” (Literally, per the Namibian parking attendant)
“I’m not interested in being liked. I’m interested in being paid.
And being paid means the scoreboard shows done. Not “doing.” Not
“thinking about it.” Done. You can’t deposit effort.
I’ve seen marketers double their profits not by improving what they sell but simply by pressing harder at the moment of decision.
Most of your leads will never come back. That’s not pessimism, it’s data. You don’t have a pipeline. You have a cemetery of “interested” people who ghosted you.
Stop hoping they’ll wander back in.
Close the sale now or count the cost forever.”
Those parking attendants certainly understand this. As do the guys working to get you to pull into their gas station to fuel your car.
Know this, that if you
can sell just one more prospect out of a hundred – the math (profit) of your business can double.
