Somewhere in
Namibia:
“What happened? Feels like everyone who lives here is shopping for groceries at the same time!”
(Can’t read the full email – click here for the online version.)
After a few days in the capital, we finally drove north to our first remote “camp” in the bush. The stand-alone home we had rented, appropriately called “Onduli’s Place”, (the place of the Giraffe) is situated approximately 30 minutes west of the central Namibian town called Okahandja.
With all the press and world hubbub about Trump’s Tariffs, the yo-yoing of
the major stock indices and the economic uncertainty thus ensued, it was nice to unplug for several days.
Indeed, just an hour after arrival, as we sat on the shaded deck enjoying a few cold beverages and gazed eastward up the dry riverbed, out popped several Springbok, an Eland and 2 inquisitive Giraffe, followed later by a small herd of Wildebeest.
What a
site!
And the birds. A cacophony with yellow-billed and gray hornbills, ring-necked doves, iridescent starlings and my personal favorite, the Crimson Bou-Bou.
Over the next few days, we were entertained by Hartebeest, Oryx, and a lucky viewing of young waterbuck. All this was a perfect retreat from not just the world but even the small city of Okahandja.
By misfortune, we choose this city to stock up on supplies. We didn’t think on the fact that it was a Friday – payday. And one of the busiest days of the week.
To me, it felt like the entire populace was inside the main supermarket, buying up a week’s worth of groceries, with their weekly pay, which they had just moments before withdrawn from the nearby ATM. Our escape from the
crush of humanity made our camp an even better oasis.
This brings me to the lesson I want to illustrate.
We were only the 2nd guests of this Airbnb. The hosts had only just received their license to offer the cabin up to guests in December. When reviews and a successful history of rental is extremely important in attracting business, how did this one attract
us?
One very important factor was the following statement in their listing.
“If you require access to WIFI for professional and/or personal reasons, we will not be able to accommodate your needs. The only connectivity you can expect to have whilst staying with us is the connection to nature. Creating also a unique occasion to experience a digital detox
from WIFI networks.”
The very fact that there would be no WIFI was actually attractive to us.
To many others, this would be a big deterrent. Most people these days want and insist on connection to the outside world, 24/7.
How is this a lesson you may very well ask?
One of the best ways to attract customers and clients who share your values and are looking for an experience you also wish to share, is to make sure you also make it clear who you do not want.
Remember, you cannot and do not want to, serve everyone. You attract your best customer when you narrow your focus to your best customer. These clients can often be found by making it clear, for whom your
product or service is NOT for.
Until next week,
Stay healthy and focus on profit!
