“Would any of you care for a nice lemon meringue pie, freshly made just now?”
(Can’t read the full email – click here for the online version.)
A new continent with new experiences awaits. After some 20 hours of flying and a day of travel, we landed earlier this week in South Africa. A day later, after an attempt at overcoming jet-lag – we took another flight to the capital city of this former German colony and South African administration.
We are here to travel with good friends of ours who emigrated from South Africa some 25
years ago. They still have family in the country and here in “South-West Africa” too.
It’s their first trip back.
We had talked about such a trip for many years, but I really hadn’t expected it to become a reality – so soon. It’s a long trip and it’s not cheap – at least not the flights.
My wife and I have
befriended many South Africans who have made Canada their home. The trials and tribulations of overcoming the racial years of Apartheid, to the racial “apartheid” of the whites is legendary. Our one friend told us just the other day how her brother’s home, even within a heavily protected, gated community, had been broken into and cleaned out, not once but twice in recent years.
So things in that country are still dangerous.
Namibia somehow found its way to independence without that violence.
Sure, if you are a white farmer and you want to sell your land – another white may not buy it. Only a black person. The roads are terrible, and public infrastructure is not being maintained.
Nonetheless, with a low population and no social tension as is
still found in SA, things feel very smooth here. Very comfortable.
And very green.
The country has seen the most rain this past summer it has seen for over 100 years! Our friends mentioned this as well. Never in their lives, in all the times they visited the country, was it this green. It was always dry and dusty.
On our first day here we drove into the city center. There we found well-appointed cafes, a craft market and a decent shopping center. Traffic was moderate and respectful. That may be because of the many potholes one must be wary of.
4x4 safari vehicles, equipped with extra gas tanks, tires, and camping equipment were in evidence everywhere. Indeed – this country with it’s wide-open spaces is ideal for safari,
especially as it now enters the dry season.
After dropping not a few dollars at the craft market, we took a breather and grabbed some beverages at the café. The weather was perfect. Sunny with some clouds, temperatures in the low to mid-70’s.
Not too long after we had sat down and ordered our drinks, our waitress came back brandishing a large plate filled with delicious
looking lemon meringue pies.
She said they were freshly made and asked if we would like some.
My wife and I quickly said “yes”.
They were fresh and they tasted heavenly.
But that is not the real reason I am telling you this story. No, the real reason is both the fact that she was
forthright in asking for an additional sale but that she did so by presenting us with massive physical evidence of the proposition she was about to make.
There is a real lesson here.
Physical demonstration of the product is still one of the very best ways to sell it. It is not enough to simply talk about it. Show it off. Make clear to your prospects the selling features and
help them get an emotional and logical connection to what you are selling.
That was done brilliantly.
Then there is the strategy.
One of the easiest ways to increase sales and profits is to increase the average size of your customers’ purchases.
One
great tactic of that strategy is to up-sell or cross-sell to them. This tactic, brilliantly performed by our waitress was a great and simple example.
Your job as a coach or business owner is to first examine and determine if you have tactics in place, that are achieving the goal of increasing the average value of every transaction your customers, clients, patients make.
Do this and see your profits multiply.
Until next week,
Stay healthy and focus on profit!
