Vail,
Colorado
“Do you happen to know this mountain well?”

We were riding a lift from one of the back bowls of Vail when I was asked this question. My wife felt they were hoping for some guidance as they had the shell-shocked look that some newcomers to Vail’s back bowls experience; especially when 3-4 feet off new snow has fallen in the past four to five days – most of it in the past 2.
“We are not used to such deep
snow.” The man on my right said. “Plus, with the cloud, it is not so easy to see where we are and where we should go”.
The older man on his right nodded in agreement.
“Where are you guys from?” I asked, sensing a distinct Spanish accent.
“Argentina”. Came the
reply.
Turned out they were from Mendoza, a major Argentine city near the border with Chile. I told them I had taught skiing in the resort of Las Lenas, many years ago. They knew it well, they said and had skied there frequently.
Las Lenas is perhaps the largest ski area in South America. It certainly was
back in my ski instructor days, with close to 5,000 hectares of inbound skiing. But the real jewel was the additional 15,000 available “off-piste” hectares; lift-accessible; ski back to the base terrain that really makes it one of my favourites of all time.
Still, living in a city like Mendoza is like living in San Francisco. There are mountains visible but skiing every day or even every weekend, is not something most
would do. Even fewer in a country like Argentina which up until recently, has suffered 70 years of decline and stagnation.
At the top of the lift, I directed them on how they could easily reach the front side runs, many of which would have been groomed recently.
It’s amazing how often we see or find folks floundering away, quite lost, in the massive area of Vail’s
renown back bowls. Even with all the apps and online information available.
So, I was pleasantly surprised when riding our morning shuttle, to see a young couple with a bunch of “old-school” pamphlets in their hands, as they tried to decide upon the right rental shop to visit, to obtain some proper “boards” to navigate the deep snow.
The day before they had
attempted to ski with their narrow, “east coast” equipment, best used for hard-pack or icy conditions.
Kudos for those shops, printing up promotions for their skis and equipment and distributing them among the various accommodations in the valley.
They had offers too, albeit very basic.
Most used pricing as their offer to entice new prospects - 20-30% off, seemed the most common.
This is not my preferred tactic, but it can work, if the shop has an excellent system that will up-sell any customer who is lured by it. That is, if they have a back-end strategy, they can “lose” money on the initial sale.
This is the tactic of “buying”
a customer. You’ve seen it with most supermarkets – with discounts on staples like milk etc., to lure you in with the hope that you buy the rest of your stuff with them.
Vehicle oil and lube shops use similar tactics so they can upsell you on other mechanical upgrades.
The key point for you, (or for your clients if you are a coach) is that print media is not dead. In
fact, total offline marketing was over $200 Billion in 2023. (US alone).
The important thing about the promotion of any business is not whether you are doing it online or off. What’s important is whether the media you employ, will be seen, read and then acted upon, by the ideal customer, client or patient, you are trying to attract.
Not sure how to do that? Find,
attract and persuade your ideal customer to respond to your promotion? Or, how to craft your message? Discover which media to use?
Then our new and improved online Business Academy is for you. There are 52 sections on everything you want to know to find and attract all the
business you can handle. And it is all available for little more than a nice cappuccino or latte per day.
