Last week was a roller coaster. Five days of watching our daughter’s team compete for the Canadian University National Rugby Championship. Eight of the best teams from across the country convened at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for this crown. Only one could remain a champion.
There were big wins, close losses and then the relief of a bronze medal. Their conquerors at the Ontario Championships, just a week
earlier only ended up 5th. It’s tough winning the biggest prizes in any endeavour.
So, when I saw a post from a good friend of mine, who has coached scores of winning athletes – I had to share it. Enjoy!

“The thing about sports is most of the important lessons are from the losing.
Losing a big game or having a bad day on the track.
Losing your spot on the team.
Losing a season because of injury
Losing your passion for a sport you once loved.
Winning is way more fun, but losing and learning from it? That's the gold right there.
Losing can give us the push we need to work harder.
It can help us see our mental or physical vulnerabilities and adjust how we approach the sport, and maybe even life.
It can teach us how to be more gracious, more compassionate, humbler.
And when you lose on a big stage, it can feel like agony, especially when it wasn't the way you wanted to end it
all.
But there are lessons in losing, so many beautiful, breathtaking, life-changing lessons.
Like learning that your self-worth is not tied up in your achievements.
Like learning that you have people who love you when you win, but even more so when you lose.
Like learning how to pivot, be more
resilient, stay focused on your goals.
Like learning that sometimes luck just doesn't go your way.
Like learning that there is more to life than success in your sport, like being a good teammate, a good person, and a good friend.
I read once that "sports can be a powerful, evocative, and emotional experience.
As a consequence, the outcome of winning and losing frequently generates powerful waves of emotions in athletes, parents, coaches, and fans.
We should be coached and played to win. But we should also be coached and played to lose.
Because you can work your hardest and win. But you can also work your hardest and lose.
And that's the beauty of sports.
It's okay to be sad. It's okay to be disappointed. But don't let those emotions take over your will to try again.

As a marketer – we do not speak about failure – although there are many. Instead we prefer to initiate our campaigns in manageable ways. What we call “tests”.
We test small numbers and smaller budgets. We test the audience. We test our subject and headlines. We
test our sales copy. We test our offers.
Most important of all, is we measure the results of these “tests” and strive to “knock” the previous effort off. To best it with better results. Better returns. Better economics.
Let me be clear. In the beginning, we usually "lose". We can have zero response. No replies. No sales.
It doesn't mean we have failed. It means that "test" has failed and we need to look to change components of the campaign and try again.
So whenever you are looking to improve your sales or profits, think in terms of “testing and measuring”. Expect many “failures” or “losses”. Each becomes a stepping-stone upon which to build success, improve and
grow.
