“Up next, riding Raging Inferno and hailing from New Mexico is last year’s National Finals Rodeo Bull Riding Champion, Calgary Stampede Champion in 2019 …”
(Can’t read the full email – click here for the online
version.)
Summer finally arrived without warning – just in time for the Calgary Stampede. Girls in halter tops and short jean shorts, sporting slick cowboy boots were getting sunburned. Guys dressed as cowboys, with jeans, boots and western shirts were sweating buckets.
This massive event is like a State Fair on steroids. We're talking about 10 action-packed days of rodeo
thrills, delicious eats, and lively entertainment that all started way back in 1912.
Back then, folks were drawn to the Stampede for a taste of the Wild West and a chance to celebrate the rich traditions of horsemanship and cowboy culture. Fast forward to today, and the Stampede has become a world-famous extravaganza that attracts folks from near and far.
The big lure is the
famous rodeo – bull-riding, saddle-bronc, bareback, steer wrestling, calf-roping and barrel racing. Combine that with the unique chuck wagon races in the evening, live shows, acres and acres of amusement stands, rides and eateries all culminating with a twilight fireworks and drone display.
But that’s not all.
The largest convention center in Western Canada at over 1 million
square feet lies within the Stampede grounds, hosting a plethora of small and large entrepreneurs selling everything from western wear to household cleaning products.
It’s a testament to the organizing and marketing prowess of the Stampede Committee that they can charge a fee to enter the grounds, charge extra fees to watch the rodeo event, more dollars for the evening shows and charge all the vendors for there stall spaces.
Yes, they do a good job maximizing their customers’ average spend.
The individual vendors, especially those I observed in the convention hall – not so much. Nor did I observe them doing anything at all to build lists of customers to whom they could promote their wares in the future.
I wrote about this marketing
failure by so many business owners back in June of last year. (You can read that again here)
No system to collect names really from both buyers and non-buyers. In today’s age of online marketing systems – this is just
inexcusable. Many if not most of these vendors could triple of quadruple their sales from the 10-day event by incorporating such as system.
What about you? Are making the same mistake?
Until next week,
Stay healthy and focus on profit!
