“Wow! The mountains are magical today. Think I’ll take a walk.”
(Can’t read the full email – click here for the online version.)
And just like that,
winter left, and spring arrived. Temperatures hit, then surpassed the 70F mark. The local parks became alive with the joyous sounds of kids screaming. The tennis courts were full. Even the local elk put in an appearance, attracted by new grass on the soccer field.
One of my daily activities is to walk the trails near our place. There are miles of them. They meander through scrub bush, old-growth spruce and along some of the dried
waterways. With the recent snowfall, the mountain tops were clearly defined against a dark blue sky.
Absolutely magical.
At the beginning of one of these walks, on a dead-end street leading to these trails, I noticed another right of spring. A fellow up on a ladder, washing the windows of one of the houses.
Parked
on the street were two trucks, with the business name and number on the side. So, a legitimate business, doing work.
My eyes traveled up above the windows to the roof. It looked like it could use some re-shingling. Then I thought of the eavestroughs and the issue we had had the week before.
I looked at the neighbouring houses. Wondered about their windows, eaves and
roofs.
My next thought was to wonder if the window cleaner saw all the potential extra business all around him like I did. His absence the next day told me he did not.
This is not surprising. Most business owners completely miss the easiest opportunities for more sales and profits.
Let me illustrate a
few of the missed opportunities here:
- The most obvious is the opportunity with the homeowner whose windows he was cleaning. The cleaner could have offered to check and clean the eavestrough. Since he was there, and had the ladders – why not offer this easy upsell?
- Refer the homeowner to a
reputable roofing company. Offer a discount coupon, so the roofer could identify and compensate the referral. The cleaner could also easily notify the roofer directly and have the roofer approach the homeowner, with a discounted offer – because they had hired the cleaner.
- The window cleaner could have also hung doorhangers or distributed “in the neighbourhood” informational offers to
surrounding homes. This is a great way to get additional sales with very little promotional expenditure.
- Similarly, the cleaner could have put up simple sandwich signs advertising a similar “neighbourhood” deal to attract the attention and get business, from people walking or driving by.
Instead – this business, like most others, hopes his
website, google my business and local paper/radio ads etc. will bring him business. Not only are these methods more expensive but the owner has no control over when and how much, business will come his way.
Most importantly, this business is missing out on the easiest way to grow a business – which is to increase the average transaction size, per customer.
