Grand Junction,
Colorado
“And now...scan the code on your screen to vote the best Super Bowl ad of all time.”
(Can’t read the full email – click here for the online version.)
We’ve left the snowy peaks of the Wasatch Mountains and the ski town of Park City. Once again, the snow did not disappoint, and we had more than a few “first tracks.”
We’re spending a few days with relatives in this cool, small city right near the border of Colorado and Utah.
This area has long been a “gold mine” for agriculture –
surrounding towns with names like Fruita, Orchard Mesa and Fruitvale stating definitively what kind of agriculture.
Grand Junction is also known as the "Rocky Mountain West's Wine Country." That's right – there are over 20 wineries in the area, and they're churning out some great vintages.
But that's not all – Grand
Junction is a total paradise for outdoor lovers. With epic hiking trails, awesome biking routes, and river rafting adventures, there's no shortage of ways to get your adrenaline pumping. And – if you're a dino fanatic, you'll be in heaven. The area is a renown for fossil hunting.
Basically, the area is famous for “Nature's Trifecta”. These are: Colorado National Monument, known as a mini-Grand Canyon;
the Grand Mesa, the largest flat-top mountain in the world bursting with over 300 lakes; and Rattlesnake Arches, the 2nd-most concentration of natural arches in the world.
Good for us, at “only” 4600 feet above sea level – it is also a welcome relief from skiing between 7500 and 10,000 feet the past week.
On our first evening here, our hosts
had a unique show (for us) on television. A show going over the “best” Super Bowl ads of all time with a prompt at the end encouraging viewers to vote for their number 1.
Naïve as we are about many things American, it had not occurred to us that this was Super Bowl Weekend – one of the biggest sporting spectacles in the US.
But we certainly had heard and
seen, some of the ads that companies have spent millions to produce and place.
First off, these ads are like a mini-movie extravaganza right in the middle of the Big Game. We're talking all the glitz, glam, and star power you can handle – and then some. From heartwarming stories to laugh-out-loud humor, Super Bowl ads take us on an emotional rollercoaster in just a matter of seconds.
But the real kicker? They're practically a pop culture phenomenon! People dissect and debate these ads for days – and hey, who wouldn't? They're packed with mind-blowing creativity, cutting-edge special effects, and surprise celebrity cameos that keep us glued to our screens.
They've become a major event in their own right. It's like a showdown for the best and boldest ads of the year, and advertisers bring their
A-game to win over the hearts and minds of viewers like us.
One big problem with them.
They are the exact opposite of the kind of ad you, the small business owner should emulate.
They have only ONE or at best two of the four elements necessary to guarantee your ad or promotion will work, for you. That is, Make. You. Money.
Later this same evening, while watching an old Clint Eastwood western, the ads that were shown this time, contained all the elements you should incorporate, with none of the glitz.
These were ads selling
everything from cleaning mops and cookware to Viagra.
Most important of all, without exception, they all included phenomenal offers with clear means to buy.
So, I encourage you, if you are watching the big game today, enjoy the ads – for sure, but make sure none of yours’ follow their structure – unless you wish to go out of business soon.
Until next week,
Stay healthy and focus on profit!
