Lava Hot Springs,

“Don’t talk to him just yet. He’s had to send all the clients home today and cancel all of next week’s trips.”

We’re enjoying a relaxing soak or three, in the hot waters of Lava Hot Springs.
Back in the 19th century, it was a popular pit stop for pioneers braving the Oregon Trail. These brave souls would chill out in Lava Hot Springs, soaking in the therapeutic waters before continuing their epic trek westward.
It was like a
19th-century rest and relaxation spa!
But before the Oregon Trail was all the rage, Lava Hot Springs was already a hot spot (pun intended) for indigenous peoples. Native American tribes, including the Shoshone-Bannock, had been soaking in these natural hot springs for centuries before Lewis and Clark even knew what a hot tub was.
We have
driven 2 lengthy days to get here: our starting point this time Kelowna, BC. We had hoped to get some more skiing in the southern and eastern part of the province before heading south to Utah and Colorado.
But the infamous “Pineapple Express” that wreaked havoc on the coast came all the way through to the Alberta border. Rain up to 3000 meters ( 9800 feet) totally ruined the snow conditions at all the ski hills we had
hoped to visit.
The forecast for this week wasn’t much better but down south, from California through Colorado, the situation was much better. With their much higher elevations, most resort peaks well over 10,000 feet – the mountains were receiving snow, instead of rain.
Put yourself into the shoes of the owners of the resorts having to shutter operations in the middle
of their season. Think too of the spin off effect on all the other revenue lost throughout the resorts because of fewer visitors.
These businesses remind one of the hardships and challenges that face farmers who are reliant on the weather. They must plan for and have contingency plans to ensure they sow the right crop at the right time, with the right equipment to handle wet or dry conditions.
Running a small business can be tough, especially when you're faced with uncertainties like unpredictable weather. You might be wondering how to handle these uncertainties and ensure that your business stays afloat even when things go south.
First off, it's crucial to have a solid plan in place for when unexpected events occur. This could mean having a contingency fund set aside to cover expenses during lean times, or
having backup suppliers in case your regular ones are affected by weather-related issues.
In some cases, you might be eligible to invest in business interruption insurance. This can provide financial protection if your business is forced to close temporarily due to circumstances beyond your control, like extreme weather events.
Building strong relationships with your customers and suppliers is crucial. By keeping them informed of any potential disruptions to your business, you can
maintain their trust and loyalty, even during challenging times.
And finally, don't underestimate the power of being proactive. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan ahead whenever possible. This could mean adjusting your inventory or scheduling outdoor events around more favorable weather conditions.
Lastly – it always pays to aim in being the number 1 player in your industry with the ability to charge premium prices.
Achieving higher profit margins will allow you to handle any unexpected downturns much better.
By implementing these practical tips, you can ensure that your business remains resilient in the face of uncertainties, without having to spend a cent upfront. Remember, it's all about being prepared, building strong relationships, and staying proactive.
Until next week,
Stay healthy and focus on profit!
