“I don’t believe it! The guy is playing and singing ‘The Sound of Silence’– on the
bus!!!”

We spent last week in Mexico City – probably the most chaotic, crazy, charming and surprising city I’ve ever visited. At 28 million (or 40 million – take your pick) it is a massive city bulging to overflowing with humanity. Yet, there
are amazing pockets of tranquil green parks and residential streets, smack jab near the middle of it all.
We planned this trip to coincide with the the Day of the Dead celebrations (newsflash – it’s a week not a day..). Think of the opening scene from the James Bond movie –
Spectre.
But I’m not writing about that event, as spectacular as it is.
This story is about our trip to the
Pyramids of Teotihuacan – about an hour northeast of the city. What’s cool about these structures, apart from being some of the largest in the world and having been constructed between 100 BCE to 650 CE, is that no one knows who built them, why they were built and why the people left.
But that is still not the story I wish to tell you.
It was the ride itself and the experience on the pyramid grounds, that was the real adventure. Here we got to witness capitalism and selling at its best.
To begin with, no sooner had the bus left the “compound” than the driver does a rolling stop and lets on a street vendor. This guy walks the length of the bus and comes back – selling an assortment of snacks and beverages, before being dropped off a few blocks away. This was easily done, since the traffic was so bad, we were hardly moving for the first 10
minutes.
Later during the trip, at each stop, there were vendors selling to waiting passengers. Vendors coming onto the bus. Even a guy selling collared, white shirts to the drivers!
At one stop, a man walks on with quite a big bag.
Not long afterwards, we hear the strumming of a guitar and notes from a windpipe.
Simon and Garfunkel in Spanish!
But he was good. He played for some 30 minutes of the 50-minute trip – getting dropped off a few miles from the town near the pyramids.
Most of the passengers gave him money.
Then, the musician exchanged his coins with the driver for bills, leaving the driver with a nice commission, I’m sure.
Once off the bus, you were accosted by vendors selling guiding services to straw hats and everything in between, along the avenue to the site itself.
Then, once inside,
vendors where everywhere, selling rugs, ceramics, small statues and more. Then there were the sellers of hummingbird whistles and jaguar howls.
There are a few lessons here for you.
Firstly, a buyer is a buyer is a buyer.
In this local setting, we have folks who have paid for tickets. For the bus, entrance to the grounds etc. I cannot say that the vendors are making a ton of money. But for sure
the “owner” or manager of the resource, be it the bus or the grounds, is getting paid by the sellers. Either with a commission or a fixed “rental” amount.
Naturally, I am not recommending that you bombard your customers or clients with offers or salespeople.
All I am saying, is that you are leaving money on the table if you do not offer additional products or services to those who are already paying you money. And those services or products do not need to be your own. They can be from another business.
This is one of the principle 12 strategies we use to help businesses like yours grow
exponentially. It can take some creative thinking but it pays off handsomely.
