By the time you get this, I should be in Weyburn, in southeast Saskatchewan. It’s a small, yet prosperous little town, built on the rail line. Originally, it’s main purpose was in providing support to the large farms that surround it. Now there are also a plethora of oil and gas firms, supporting the drilling and maintenance of a huge number of wells within a 50 mile radius. 

My wife’s grandfather came up from Minnesota before the area was even a Province of Canada and with brothers and relatives, staked out homesteads, which are still in the family to this day, almost 120 years now. 

At one point, her father lived in a small house with 7 other siblings and across the entrance drive he had 14 cousins living in the house of his uncle. They liked to boast that they had enough kids to field 2 baseball teams – no need to find more….

We’re here to attend the funeral of one of my wife’s aunts. And because that family was also quite large, she will get the opportunity to visit with many of the first cousins she grew up with.

The weather promises to continue to be nice for this time of year. Highs in the low 70’s, mostly sunny. 

Even here in the mountains of Alberta – we’ve had an amazing Fall, other than a few days of frosty mornings, and a day or two of rain that has left a layer of fresh snow down to the treeline at 7000 feet.

You know it’s fall, and winter isn’t far away.

The leaves are turning. The needles of the larch trees are already a magnificent gold in the high alpine. 

And the elk rut has been in full force. 

In our area, the largest and dominant bull has only one antler! No idea how he lost it but that hasn’t seemed to dampen his vigor nor his success.

One other event occurred that indicated summer was gone and winter was approaching.

The annual “warehouse” sale put on by a local and successful, manufacturer and retailer of beauty soaps, lotions and more.

That was why my wife reminded me several times that I had better get to their offices before the 10:00 am opening time, else I’d be forced to wait in a long queue before being allowed in to buy.

Naturally, I did not heed this warning, and savoured my late breakfast and second cup of cappuccino.

I had been warned.

By time I arrived, 30 minutes after the official opening, the line had to be over 50 meters! Outside! People had driven in from Calgary, an hour away to participate.

While I was waiting, I had the thought; “I sure hope what we save in purchases that she wanted me to buy, is more than the value of my time spent in line!” I’d better earn my hourly rate – was my thinking. Well, it turned out it was well worth it – and this week’s business lesson for you.

• Everybody loves a sale – especially when the advertised savings might be 60% or more – and it’s a product or service people know and love.
   
• The business was selling all the items they felt they had too much inventory of. Meaning, they hadn’t sold as much of these items as they had expected (or hoped) over the summer – and wanted to move the stock out.
   
• To make it even easier for customers to buy, they created special bundle pricing. Buy any 3 of this – just $5. Or get 5 of these for $15. All items were on sale, but their bundling strategy enticed people to buy more. 
   
• They handed out a small gift to everyone who was waiting in line to thank them for coming. This enticed everyone to remain in line until it was their turn to head up into the buying space they had set up.

The only thing missing, from my perspective, was to get the names and email/phone #s of everyone who attended. This would have been easy to do. While the girl was handing out the gift, she could also have had a small placard, with a QR code – advertising another offer, down the line.

This way, they could follow-up with more offers, and entice the participants to buy even more.
