After last week’s story on how buying a customer was much easier (and more ethical) then buying a vote, I got to thinking about some of the best stories I’ve heard on the subject.
One that came to mind is a promotion crafted by Jay Abraham for client who had an arthritic pain-relief product called; Icy-Hot.
Here’s the kicker. The client was prepared to pay 115% of the retail price of the product to get customers. But he didn’t want to spend a dime on advertising.
Jay concocted the idea of
approaching radio and TV stations, magazines, and mail-order agencies, and offering to pay them 115% of the retail value on the first bottle purchased. Customers would be asked to pay the participating media companies directly the full retail price and Jay's client would pay these advertisers an additional 15% on top. All they would need is the customer details so they could ship the product.
To get the media outlets to participate, Jay asked them if they would put this promotion into any and all of their unsold ad space or time.
The result?
For a net loss of $0.93 on each first bottle, the client got nearly 1,000,000 people to try out his product at least once. But that's not all.
Of those 1,000,000 people, 380,000 came back at least six times a year, with an average order of $10 each time.
So, for a one-time loss of about
$930,000, this client added $21,000,000 a year to his business - of which over half was real profit! And he didn't pay out the $930K all at once, nor at the beginning.
This client knew his numbers. Not only did he know and understand the obvious one, the cost of goods sold – but he also knew the lifetime
value of a customer. That once they had tried the product, a large percentage would buy over and over again.
In conclusion, if you want to get more customers fast without spending a fortune, take a page out of Jay Abraham's book. By developing or
creating a Unique Selling Position, an irresistible offer, and a solid tracking system, you can use the power of media to skyrocket your business success.
