Indian Wells, California
“I really like your movies. Can I get a photo with you?”
(Can’t read the full email – click here for the online version.)
When they say, ‘truth is stranger than fiction’; they weren’t kidding around. We experienced just this kind of incident late last week on the tennis grounds of Indian Wells.
My wife and I were seated in a front row at the end of stadium 4, where some excellent doubles matches were being held that day. It was a warm day, made more so by facing the sun.
Out of the blue, I heard a woman shout out; “Hugh!”
I turned around and looked
back. A few rows up and behind a woman of Indian descent was smiling and waving. I replied, “Yes?”. She asked, “You are Hugh. Yes?” I nodded and asked her in return. “Do I know you?” She said something to the effect that we did not, yet.
I smiled and turned my attention back to the match. I was wondering if we had met at a conference somewhere.
Not 5 minutes later, during a break in the tennis, the lady climbed down to where we sat and asked if she
could have her picture taken with me. Said something about how nice it was to see me here at the tournament watching the tennis.
My wife, somehow, managed not to crack up; nor did our new British friends, sitting just behind us.
Not 20 minutes later, another young woman came down a few rows, saying how much she loved my movies and could she get a photo with me. This time, I couldn’t keep up with the ruse. I gently told her that she had me mistaken for the actor with the last name Grant. I was simply his “double”…. 😏
It’s not every day we get mistaken for a famous actor. It’s flattering and unnerving at the same time.
What does this have to do with you and your business, you’re asking?
Much more than you think.
Ever notice how often larger companies use celebrities in their marketing and promotions? They do it for one very good reason.
They get people’s attention. And getting attention, is the first job of any promotional piece.
Even better than just a celebrity, is an authority figure, who is also a celebrity. These folks not
only grab our attention but keep it too.
Now, I hear you saying, that you couldn’t possibly afford to hire any big name celebrity for your little business. And you are right. But there are a few simple ways you can achieve the same impact, in your local
market.
- Hire someone who is a ‘local’ celebrity. That person might be your local radio or TV personality, local sports star, etc.
- Turn yourself into an authority/celebrity by writing a
book, speaking and sponsoring events. Starting and running a podcast.
Since our current culture values celebrity so highly, you owe it to your business’ success to figure out how to incorporate it into your marketing.
Until next week,
Stay healthy and focus on profit!
