It’s election time here in Alberta. It’s not official yet, (the fixed date is May 29th) but that hasn’t stopped the negative smear ads already being printed and posted.
We’re in a “swing” riding, made more so by the previous government’s change in riding boundaries. The party then in power figured they should help their cause by ensuring fewer of the other party’s voters were in it.
For those of you who are not familiar with Canada and its politics, Alberta has always been viewed, and behaved, like Canada’s Texas. Oil and natural gas are found in abundance. We produce wheat and barley and other grains and are very proud of our “Alberta Beef”.
And its politics, was known as being staunch conservative….
Until about 8 years ago.
Then, a socialist party, called the New Democrats won. This was considered a big surprise. However, the old conservative party was so full of cronyism
and poor leadership, that a splinter conservative party had arisen, causing a split vote among the conservative base and the NDP snuck in.
As you know, politics isn’t this letter’s beat. There is, however, something to learn from a successful campaign to be
successful in business.
Let me explain.
One
of the most effective tactics in any political campaign is getting ardent volunteers to go “knocking” physically, door to door. This is one of those proven tactics. Especially when these volunteers are local to the area - basically calling upon their neighbors, canvassing support, working on swaying undecided voters and determining who they will want to call upon to
ensure they actually vote, come election day.
When a campaign is going well, there can be hundreds of such people, working evenings and weekends – free of charge.
Most will get nothing tangible in return. In truth, most believe whole-heartedly in their candidate’s platform and in the party the candidate represents.
Imagine if you had such an army of unpaid salespeople, knocking on their neighbors’ doors, telling everyone who will listen, about your products and services.
You’d see a pretty good jump in your
company’s sales as a result, wouldn’t you?
But now you’re telling yourself, that’s not possible. Your business isn’t a political campaign, and you could never create such an army.
Rubbish!
Many businesses have done just this. And their “army of volunteers” are working for them 365 days a year: not just every election cycle.
Who is this army you ask?
Why, their own customers and clients,
of course! Voluntarily referring others. On a regular basis that the owner can count on.
I am not talking about ad hoc “word of mouth”.
Many of you have this, assuming you are providing a service or selling a product that exceeds expectations.
No, I am talking about a constant stream of referrals, which comes about because of 2 things.
- You have a unique and strategic advantage over your competition in your marketplace and you deliver exemplary service.
- You have put into place several proactive systems that are
designed to ensure your customers and clients deliver, voluntarily, all the referrals you can handle.
Without number one, which we call having a Market Dominating Position, it is very difficult to set up and achieve results no matter how good a system you install for referrals. I’ve created an inexpensive training course here, to help you.
