What a dark day that was, last week. In the blink of any eye, the reputation of a great, local, family
company, destroyed. Large companies announcing they were cancelling contracts. Negative comments on social media skyrocketed.
Why?
Because one of the owners, turned down a request for
sponsorship in the most improper way possible.
Not only did he vilify the organization asking for monies, but he went on a rant with his perceived notions of the type of people he believed such a group represented.
And he did in writing via email.
The organizer of the group took massive offense and decided to post the owner’s email on social media. Quickly, the outrage on the email, the owner and his company, went viral.
In one day, the story made it onto our provincial news. In two, it was national.
Not wishing to be seen as condoning the owner’s comments, large local companies quickly announced they were cancelling their wholesale accounts.
You might well ask the following:
- Is it ethical to make public such a private correspondence?
- Do you
really think your customers/clients will think that badly of you if you didn't cancel your association?
- Does one man’s opinion mean everyone at the company thinks the same way?
- What about the livelihood of
the hundred or so employees and their families of this organization?
My answer would be this: “Do you keep walking across the street if you see an 18-wheeler careening down upon you, even when you have the green light?”
Here’s the reality.
- To be a good person and build an excellent company, you must be productive. That's hard.
- You must continuously produce products and services that people value for the
price you ask. That’s hard.
- You must be good at hiring and managing people. And that's hard.
- And you must invest in your infrastructure and people along with developing and implementing strategies and tactics that ensures
the long-term viability of the company. And that's very hard.
Nothing but diligent, upward-oriented work over the years puts you in that position and gives you a reputation you deserve.
Yet
one foolish comment can kibosh all that you have built.
Take care to ensure that whenever you correspond with any person or group that you keep your emotions and vitriol in check. Your reputation and livelihood, depends on it.
