San Miguel de Allende, MEXICO – “Deadly daytime attack has
tourists scrambling…”
“Did you hear the news? Are you OK? Was that where you were staying?”
These were a few of the anxious questions we received last week when a story broke about a brazen attack at a beach resort south of Cancun, where two people were killed after a gunman leapt onto the beach from a
boat that had come up the coast.
The attack was drug related.
We might have walked that beach the week before. So naturally, all our friends were worried we were in mortal danger.
It’s interesting, isn’t it that we comment on events like this that occur in foreign countries if we know someone is “close” by. Are you ok? How safe is it?
When, every day, incidents like this occur in our out cities back home with little more than a comment and a shrug.
It is my opinion that every country and city the world over, has its dangers and areas one would be best to avoid. But for most part, people go about their business, doing their work, buying what they need and want, without issue or
fear.
Mexico is no different in this respect.
This particular area of Mexico, where we are currently exploring, in the central states of Queretaro and Guanajuato, are clean and prosperous. In fact, citizens from the capital often come here for the weekend to get away from the big city; like people do from all cities, the world over.
There are important lessons for us business owners.
First – everyone is most motivated to take action to avoid pain,
frustration and fear of a bad outcome – especially in the future. We move almost always towards places of safety.
So, how does your product or service help in this basic way. And does so by touching upon the emotional needs or “hot buttons” of your ideal customer?
And secondly, everyone looks for an experience or emotional benefit from what they buy. They do not buy the “feature” of your product or service. They buy to get a benefit, an end result – a feeling of
contentment, joy, safety that the product or service will give them when they use or consume it.
What are you doing to communicate this when describing what you do or sell?
Last week I promised to reveal in more detail, the insights from the conference of my fellow peers in Cancun. I’ll be speaking on the key ones today during each of the events I am presenting on. You can sign up to either or both,
